Planning for Your Pet
When clients name us as their Fiduciary on their legal estate planning documents, one of our legal roles is to oversee the transition of your pet and ensure your designated caregiver receives all the guidance you have provided. While we do not directly supervise or guarantee day-to-day care once your pet is with their new owner, we make sure the caregiver receives, understands, and is fully equipped with your instructions.
By completing the Planning for Your Pet Form, provided by Placer SPCA, you provide the vital blueprint we deliver to your pet's future caregiver. Here is how we follow through in our capacity as your Professional Fiduciary:
Reaching Out to Contacts
Notifying Emergency Contacts: As your Fiduciary, we contact the emergency individuals listed on your form (including their relationship, phone numbers, and physical address) to facilitate immediate initial care.
Handing Off Specific Care Instructions
Transferring Care Profiles: We provide the caregiver with your pet's complete profile—including license tag/microchip details, photos, markings, breed, weight, age, and spay/neuter status—and review these details with them so they understand your pet's identity.
Reviewing Daily Routines: We walk the caregiver through your specific instructions regarding feeding requirements, schedules, behavioral notes, and likes/dislikes so they are fully aware of your pet's routine.
Providing Access to Medical Records
Veterinary Info Handoff: If we have it, we share your designated veterinarian or clinic contact details, major health history, and current medication schedules directly with the new caregiver.
Retrieving Documents: If possible, we locate the vaccination certificates and medical files stored in your designated home location and ensure they are given to the caregiver.
Executing Estate Directives
Facilitating Community Support: If no caregiver was designated in your documents, we reach out to community resources such as Placer SPCA (916-872-6166 / plannedgiving@placerspca.org) to discuss options for your pet.

Once you become our client, by completing our intake and visiting your attorney, please complete the attached form and file a copy with us so we can ensure your caregiver has all the information they need when the time comes.
